I'm hoping this will help - here's a report published in December 2005 by the Vanguard Group: "How America Saves 2005." It presents lots of statistics on their plan participants, based on data from 2004.
"According to this study by the Vanguard Center for Retirement Research, the typical Vanguard plan participant is 44 years old, has an annual household income of $54,000, and is saving 6% of income. This participant has accumulated $24,000 in his current employer’s plan and is invested in a diversified equity-oriented portfolio."
