What is garnishment of property other than wages mean?

Besides garnishing my wages, I heard they sieze your bank accounts, how does that work? And can they garnish or seize your 401k?

I only have $5000 in my 401k and have to payout alotto prevent garnishment of my wages. what is the penalty on that?
