What form is best.

My husband and I are filing jointly for the first time without a tax pro doing it for us and I want to know which is the best form to use. We make less than 50,000 year, no kids, renters, no car or other major purchases, we pay our own health insurance, he has a small IRA at our local bank for retirement, and I started a 401k in January of 09.

From what you've described, most people in your situation will to use a 1040A, taking the standard deduction.

If you itemize, you'll use the longer form 1040.

Double check to be sure your itemized deductions would be less that the standard dedcution, since you are paying your own health insurance.

Hey, taxes are FUN!

I do suggest using tax software than may capture credits/deductions you may not be aware of. It's less expensive than a tax preparer for doing federal and state returns, but can pay for itself if it helps you find deductions or credits. They're all good, but I do like Turbo Tax Deluxe.
