Tax fraud I am a CPA employed by a privately held corporation which expects me to violate tax law. I am not comfortable with this and am wondering what recourse I have. Am I eligible for unemployment if I quit to avoid violating my ethics and jeopardizing my career? I intend to report the violation to the IRS and state DRS. I am in NC.

You need to call your states labor department and file a complaint. Then call the unemployment see if your particular situation allows you to quit. In most situations you have to be laid off by no fault of your own, but someone at unemployment can confirm if your situation allows you to collect. A couple of years ago I had an employer that stop giving us paychecks, but didn't close for business, just told us they would be there next week or the week after, so I quit and was able to collect unemployment while looking for another position.

Being a CPA it sounds like you honestly have a great code of ethics for doing business. Be brave and just quit your current job. Remember what happened to Bernie Madoff? Eventually all criminals get caught. I am sure that you will find a better job somewhere else with your talent and experience. It always pay to be honest and you will never have to worry about having your freedom being taken away.

A CPA takes an oath and must live up to it. You cannot sign your name to anything illegal or fraudulent or otherwise in violation of your oath.
If you quit over this, you may jeopardize future employment with companies that might similarly expect you to violate your professional oath, but that's not really that big a loss, is it? For companies that do business within the bounds of the law, you may actually enhance your reputation by taking such a drastic step.
