Social Security Disability Income

Is Social Security Disability income taxable? Do I have to file a return for it?

I think so. My dad has been on disability and workmans comp for about 17 years and has to pay taxes on it every year.

Is social security assessed on the gross income or the gross less the 401k contributions? if the contributions are not subject to ss taxes, then the employers ss tax would be reduced by the same amount, right?
