My employer recently canceled all employee 401k plans. How long until I recieve my money? The company I work for was recently purchased by another larger company, and the new owner decided that all employee 401k plans would be canceled. We each recieved a letter stating that the necessary paperwork was being filed for disemburstment of our money. How long should I expect to wait before I recieve my money? |

They haven't given us the option of rolling it over, but I'm still not worried about the taxes. This has actually been a several month long process. I've asked bosses/managers/secretaries/ect, they either give me a very vague/indirect answer, or just tell me they don't know. We just recently got the letter saying "disemburstments are being prepared", and I was hoping to know.

It really depends on the companies situation. When a plan disolves paperwork has to be filed with the IRS to comply with all ERISA law. They need approval prior to processing any distributions. THe type of company can have an impact as well. We had a bank that had to go through the FDIC and it took a little over a year. Some smaller companies process as soon as the approval is received. There is no law stating you must receive it within any certain time frame. Your administrator will have the most up to date information. Keep in contact with them for timeframes.
