The limit on 401(k) contributions (elective deferrals) for both 2009 and 2010 is $16,500.
If you are over age 50, you can add up to $5,500 in elective deferrals.
Both numbers presume you have a high enough income to be allowed to defer this much.

I work as a food server, thus most of my "pay" is in the form of cash (tips) which i do claim and am taxed on.

I am limited on the amount that i can contribute to my 401k by my paycheck, which is a nominal hourly wage and basically covers my tax obligations. how can i contribute the cash portion of my wages into the 401k? i wish to contribute the maximum allowable, which is 16,500 for 2010.
