How many years is a 401 k open ?

My Husband quit his job 16yrs ago but worked for the company for 8yrs does he still have a 401k somewhere out there and can he still cash out on it after 16yrs if so how do we find out who to contact ? The company he worked for sold to a different company

If he had a 401k and put money in it, then yes, soewhere out their he has his 401k. He should have continued receiving monthly or quarterly statements from them.

Yes the money should still be there. You could contact the human resources at the new company (which absorbed the old one) for information.
