They will ask you the name of the father and either you tell them so that there will be a name there for the benefit of your child or you don't and when your child gets older and has to have acopy of their birth certificate and there is no name what do you tell them? And why should this man not be financially responsible for your child? It's very hard to be a single mother these days and that child deserves everything that life has to offer. The father can financially support the child and still give up his legal rights to the child ( meaning that he does not have any rights to the child) But what ever you decide I hope that you always put the needs of your child first and there will be plenty of things that your child will want and need and child support money will help out greatly...

Yes, just because the father's telling he won't be financially responsible, he's still the father.
Put his name on the birth certificate, so if you need to get child support someday you'll be able to.
Even if the father denies that the child is indeed his, a DNA test will prove he's the father.

Legally you do not have to put his name on. If you want no contact with him ever again, which includes giving up child support, and you don't want him to have visitation rights then don't put him on. In a year or two or 10 if you decide you need child support then you can make him get a DNA test, but he will be able to get visitation rights then. Being a single mom is hard, but there is a lot of help out there for you if that is what you decide. Don't let money make you decide what is best for your child.

Hey, I recently had a child. I live in the state of VA. In the Father place on the birth certificate it states unknown. I was in the mist of a seperation and my legal husband was not the father. They told me at the hospital that I could put my legal husband's name or unknown as the father, I had no other choice. The father is taking responsibility and we are in a relationship. My husband still will not grant me the divorce and we've been seperated for over two yrs. I so want to place the father's name on the birth certificate. There are many reasons to do so. One, the child, as stated in an earlier post, may want to know whom the father is one day. Two, I totally agree that it takes two to make a child. . . and their is NO REASON both should not have to finicially support the child. To many dead beat (moms and dads) get away scott free. . . and go on about their lives. . . while the only one suffering (the most) is the child they leave behind. Why should the "deadbeat" (weither mom or dad) just be able to go live it up. . . and not support the child they help make? CRAZY! Two, I keep thinking me and the father are in a great relationship. I am a stay at home mom. If he died tomorrow. . . he is not on her birth certificate, so what rights does she have to anything? If I died tomorrow (still not divorced) and his name is not on her birth certificate. . . What happens? Life is complicated enough. And the law just makes it WORSE.

In the state of California a father that is not married to the mother has to fill out a proof of paternity paper at the hospital. If the father is not present; like when he is not notified of the birth, the space on the birth certificate is left blank. The father can go to court and request a DNA and the request that his name is added on the birth certificate. It is not an easy process but it is important for many reasons. Many young moms are so wrapped up in holding the baby over the dads heads that they dont do whats really good for the baby and it's future.
