Question

Asked 4/14/2010

Do I claim 401k gross distribution (1099R) as wages or is it considered something else?

My husband lost his job after five years and, because he did not have another job at the time, he received his 401k, which was taxed as well. Do I enter the gross distribution amount as wages (line 7) on our 1040 or should it be entered under a different line? Do I add the tax withheld to the total tax withheld from the W2's which we received?

Because of the economy there have been many changes to the tax law related to early distribution of 401K and IRA funds. You really should speak to a certified accountant or use an online service because you might miss something and then be out of luck. We had someone do our taxes this year because we also had an unemployment issue and things got complicated. Better to pay a small fee and not get caught in a situation that will hurt you!

best of luck!

No, if you're using form 1040 it goes on line 16a, as you'll also be paying a 10% penalty for early withdrawal in addition to regular income taxes.

I agree with know-it-all, and even if you don't want to use a paid preparer, you can use software that will help catch and correct any mistakes you make and ask a series of questions to be sure you aren't overlooking a tax credit or deduction you may qualify for.

Turbo Tax is excellent, and there are others that are just as good.
