Claiming dependents?

Hi. I have a child living under my care and paternally he is not mine. I have been supporting him and his mother since hes been born and he is now 1 and a half years old. Can i claim him on my taxes as a dependent yes or no and if so how?

Yes you may claim him as long as he has lived with you for at least 6 months and no one else is claiming him when filing. all you will need is his social security number and birth date when you file. regardless if someone else does try to claim him when they file you are the one who has had him in your home for more than half the year so you are eligible.

I had a foster child living in my home since she was 2 month old. This child came to me Oct. 9th 2007 and stayed with me until August 2008,she went back to her parents and then the parents lost her again in November 2008.Unfortunately she did not come back to my home, she went to another foster home about 3 months ago. My question is: Who can claim her on taxes? I tried and was rejected because someone else claimed her first. I was told by the person who does my taxes that i should have been the one because of the length of time she spent with me. Is this correct?
