Can an employer take away accumulated sick time when you reduce your hours?

I used to work 22.5 hours (3 days a week) and had all the benefits of full time status, i.e paid vacation, sick days, 401K etc...
When the job became too stressful for me I decided to reduce my hours to 15 (2 days a week)
HR requested an exit interview during which they told me I had lost all my benefits (which I had anticipated) and MY ACCUMULATED SICK TIME.
Is that legal?

Well to be honest, yes. It is legal. When you accumulate sick time, this is given to those who work full time. If you no longer work full time you lose all benefits, including your sick time. Now what the company should do, is allow you to keep the sick time you have earned, and not allow you to earn anymore. I would talk to them and see what you can do. To be honest if i were you, i would take that third day back, use your sick time for for 1 day a week for 3 weeks, and then you've used it up anyways.
