Can a friend who is disabled because of severe mental problems collect on her ex-husband's social security? She will turn 62 next March. She was

Married for 20 years and has been divorced for about 10 years. She was a stay at home mother so has not contributed to Social Security on her own. Also, is she entitled to any of her ex-husband's retirement accounts such as a 401k? She lives in Florida and her ex-husband lives in Georgia. She owns a small house in Florida and has an older car. As long as she didn't remarry and was married to him for ten years or more, when it's time to collect social security, yes she can collect based on her ex-husband's lifetime earnings instead of her own.


And no, she has no rights to his current retirement funds, any claim she had to them when she was divorced would have been outlined in the property settlement of her divorce decree.
