The money that I put into a 401k is being taxed? I recently enrolled in a 401K plan. I put $25.00 in each pay period, but only $22.93 is actually being processed. I thought my money would not get taxed until I pulled it out. Also, my employer has the right not to match except once a year? ( the total amount for the year) |

I just recently enrolled in the 401K plan. $25.00 is the minimum that I can put in. Year to date it shows $22.93, so my money is getting taxed twice..once as my gross income and then going into the plan. It also shows that my employer did not match. They will match only once a year, in March, the total of what I put in. I thought that money could not be taxed until I decided to pull it early.

Your contribution has not been taxed. Is the $22.93 showing as the amount contributed to date, or as the value of the account? It is possible that the account lost a little bit of value if your 401(k) invests in stocks or mutual funds.
Also, many 401(k) trustees take out a small account fee, but that's usually done once a year and not on a per-deposit basis.
About the employer match, as long as the employer meets their contractual obligation to match your contributions, there is no legal requirement about how often the payment has to be made. When I worked for a very seasonal employer, they made quarterly match payments. Once a year isn't totally unreasonable. You might check to see if your 401(k) paperwork says anything different.

401K contributions are before tax money, so you are not being taxed on that money as income. If your account shows a value less than your contribution, it's probably because whatever stock or mutual fund you are investing in has decreased in value. In a couple of months you could find that you have more than what you contributed. The joys of the stock market -- it has it's ups and downs.
