You can always take money out of a 401K at any time. They'll just tax you on what you take out to the tune of 35%+ in the U.S. Just be careful because you're going to lose so much on the taxes that you'll really have to hit that 401K hard to get out as much as you need.

You cannot remove money from a 401k at any time. You must be retirement age, no longer employed, or disabled. There are hardship withdrawals, but the reasons that meet the requirments are few and usually not your day to day needs --- facing foreclosure, unpaid medical bills, college tuition, or home purchase are usually the only reasons allowed, There are a few exction plans that allow hardship withdrawal for debt consolidation but they are VERY few and far between. You cannot refinance or reammortize a loan.. your plan may allow for more than one loan, but you can only have 1/2 of your balance, maximum of 50k out in loans... not to mention the extra payment coming out of your paycheck to pay it back is not going to help long term cash flow. Each plan is very different, with rules set up by the sponsor (your employer)-- call the administrator for specific details...
