If a deceased relative leaves you as his 401k beneficerie how does that work

Our son may have been the beneficiary of my husbands uncle and he has sinced passed away how long before someone contacts us if at all.

They may not contact you at all... The administrator of the company's 401(k) sometimes keeps beneficiary forms on file, but not always. As well the administrator may not have even been notified the participant passed away.
Best bet is to contact the uncle's former employer to ask who the beneficiary is... If the uncle was married and it truly was a 401(k) plan, unless his spouse signed a waiver for someone else to be the benificiary, she will automatically get the money---
